At the top of the recreation and transportation agendas of the Anacostia Waterfront Initiative is the establishment of a continuous Anacostia Riverwalk and Trail along the east and west banks of the Anacostia River. The proposed Riverwalk is both a recreational amenity and a transportation alternative for Washington-area commuters, connecting neighborhoods to each other and to the greater Anacostia RiverParks system.
The Riverwalk and its loops will provide 20 miles of interconnected greenway trails, pedestrian-friendly river crossings, and cycling lanes on streets connecting waterfront recreational areas with neighborhoods and cultural sites along the Anacostia River. The proposed Riverwalk begins at the Route 50 overpass by Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens and the National Arboretum and continues downriver along both sides of the Anacostia to the Southwest Waterfront, the Tidal Basin and the National Mall.
With different corridors and loops to choose from, users will find a great variety of experiences and connections from this system to other regional and national trails like the Fort Circle Trails in east Washington; the Bladensburg Trail in Maryland; and the East Coast Greenway, a network of bicycle trails linking Maine to Florida. The existing Metrorail system will interface with the Riverwalk to create a full range of transportation alternatives in the region.
The Riverwalk has four demonstration trail sites: 1) Matthew Henson Center on Buzzard Point, 2) ECC Pump House on Potomac Ave. and 1st St., SE, 3) under the 11th Street Bridges, SE and 4) Anacostia Park at River Terrace between the East Capitol Street Bridge and the Benning Road Bridge. |
