Office of Planning 101

(Washington, DC) – In response to a number of requests for a “nuts and bolts” discussion of the planning and development review process in the District, the Office of Planning (OP) held a series of planning and land use discussions with Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners in the spring of 2007.  There are more than 280 ANC commissioners - 40 percent were elected last fall.  “ANC Commissioners play a crucial role in determining how our neighborhoods take shape,” said Harriet Tregoning, director of the Office of Planning. “So it is critical they have the tools they need to participate in the development process and be effective advocates for the residents of their communities.”

The briefings included a brief summary presentation of how the Office of Planning is organized, and a description of the main planning and development review processes.  Although the document highlights the roles that OP and the ANCs play in these processes, and it does not have all of the details needed, it provides a quick summary of how OP is structured and the various planning and review processes.

The document also includes contact information, so please feel free to call or email us if you would like more information or if you would like to discuss a specific planning or development initiative in the District.
